Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, and in Reno Tahoe, we know how to properly celebrate… with delicious Mexican food and tequila! Here’s your guide to an enticing fiesta for your taste buds and a road map to the area’s best margaritas.

Voted the Best Mexican Restaurant in Reno Magazine, Arroyo Mexican Grill inside the Freight House District offers a tantalizing menu ranging from traditional to unique and all-around delicious with entrees like, sizzling fajitas served with homemade tortillas and Al Pastor tacos filled with seasoned pork and pineapple. Arroyo also boasts over 100 choices of tequila; one of the largest selections in Reno!

Another local favorite, taking the top spot on RN&R’s Best of Northern Nevada list for Mexican restaurants, is El Adobe Café. Always fresh and always friendly, El Adobe’s extensive menu features family recipes that have been handed down through three generations.

Beto’s Mexican Food might be small in size, but you’d have a hard time finding a restaurant that is bigger on flavor. A Reno staple for many years, Beto’s serves authentic Mexican cuisine in more than generous proportions. Whether you’re in the mood for chicken tacos or feel more adventurous and want to delight in the tripe, you’re sure to leave with a full stomach and a smile.

For a mouthwatering Cinco de Mayo celebration, stop by Murrieta’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina and enjoy their vast selection of south-of-the-border favorites; including Baja fish tacos, carne asada and a fully stocked bar.

Opening just in time for Cinco de Mayo is Dos Geckos Cantina at Circus Circus Reno. Rejoice in the fiesta of flavors as the Circus Circus chefs present traditional dishes along with their own unique creations. Dos Geckos’ combination of great food, cantina motif and wide selection of Mexican beers and tequilas makes for a celebration you won’t forget!

Now we understand it wouldn’t be Cinco de Mayo without a certain frozen concoction, so we asked the nearly 28,000 followers on our Facebook page, “Where is the best margarita in Reno Tahoe?” Here’s what they said:

Los Compadres

Hacienda Restaurant and Bar

Bertha Miranda’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantina

Miguel’s Mexican Food

The first Food Truck Friday kicked off this April, marking the beginning of a new tradition in downtown Reno’s dining scene. Food Truck Fridays are held at Center and Fourth Street on the first Friday of each month, from 6 pm – 9 pm, now through October. This culinary sensation features a variety of four-wheeled gourmet kitchens collaborating together for an evening full of unique flavors; including, grilled cheese sandwiches with a little twist, hot dogs with zesty toppings and barbeque favorites… just to name a few.

Participating food trucks include:

GourMelt Grilled Cheese Truck

BoDawgs

Island Ice

St. Lawrence Pizza Co.

Sauce Wagon

Dish Truck

Kenji’s Food Truck

The excitement doesn’t end with the delicious food though. Food Truck Fridays also features live music from local bands; a beer garden hosted by Great Basin Brewing Company for the adults; and for the kids, a school bus retrofitted as a playground, known as the Tumblebus.

The inaugural Food Truck Friday was a huge success, drawing a large crowd of hungry locals and visitors who appreciate a new dining option in Reno Tahoe that is not only palate-pleasing and entertaining, but also helps promote local businesses utilizing a formerly unused complex. As the weather heats up, this one-of-a-kind event will continue to grow, promising to be a summer favorite, so don’t miss out on the tasty fun.

Written by Guest Blogger, Becky Wilcox

I was recently craving breakfast food, specifically a vegetable omelet with hash browns or a platter of golden pancakes with fruit. Not wasting a moment I headed over to my computer, started perusing restaurant menus on YellowPages.com, and finally found the dish that my taste buds sought: the Plaza Omelet at Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs, the popular breakfast spot on Sierra Street. As I savored my omelet (delicious) and my hash browns (the best in town), I realized that Reno is a great city for excellent breakfast food. And I began to wonder: What are the best restaurants for those who share my cravings? What are the best breakfast spots in Reno?

After conducting some research and eating some more food, here’s my list in no particular order:

- Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs. We may as well start with the place where I started my search – a place, coincidentally, that is clearly one of the top breakfast locations in Reno. Once named the “Best Breakfast in America,” Peg’s offers unique, quality food and large portions to boot. The most popular dish is the Huevos Rancheros, but you can’t go wrong with the California Benedict or really anything that comes with hash browns. Those with a sweeter tooth will find the French Toast an excellent option. The only real downsides are an outdated décor and a long wait on weekend mornings.

- 5th St. Bakehouse. Tucked away in a strip mall on 5th Street, the eponymous 5th St. Bakehouse offers varied choices for the heartier breakfast diner. At the restaurant you can order food that hails from the West, the South, and the Caribbean. You can experience a wide range of flavors and foods – everything from beef to pastries. The Chilaquiles and the Morning Cuban are two of the best options on the lengthy menu.

- P J & Company. If you’re looking for a traditional diner that offers fast service, reasonable prices, good coffee (and fresh juice), and a signature can’t miss dish (Eggs Benedict), then PJ & Company is definitely worth a visit. The Breakfast Burrito is another great choice – especially if it’s a large portion that you seek. In fact, while PJ & Company may not offer the most unusual food you’ve ever seen, it’s the simple (yet often rare) combination of quality and quantity that makes it stand out.

-Squeeze In. Squeeze In has a large, almost overwhelming menu; they have more omelet combinations that you could ever dream of! Omelets come with toast and potatoes, and beyond that they are diverse in taste, influence, and texture. You get your money’s worth!

-Midtown Eats. Fresh food often requires slower service, and Midtown Eats offers a good helping of both. So while the service may be slower than that of your traditional breakfast diner, the food is definitely fitting of the wait: whether you’re getting the waffles or the Sunrise Omelet, you’re likely to leave satisfied. Midtown Eats also delivers when it comes to sides; bread, coffee, juice, and vegetables all taste fresh and all perfectly complement your meal.

These are my top five breakfast restaurants in Reno, but there are certainly pros and cons of each place – as well as other great options out there. What do you think? What are the best places to get your morning fix in town?

So, before the bottle service and free champagne at the hottest New Year’s Eve parties, before joining thousands under the arch for the final countdown, and before the massive firework show coinciding with that special New Year’s kiss, indulge in some of the finest cuisine the “Biggest Little City” has to offer.
