Food lovers will unite to celebrate the 2nd annual Reno Bites restaurant week, taking place October 20-27, 2013 at approximately 20 locally owned Reno restaurants.
Created to encourage foodies to explore and patronize locally owned restaurants, plus foster community among local restaurateurs and chefs, Reno Bites is now in its second year boasting a larger array of participants and events.
Reno’s first ever restaurant week event was built to encompass local eateries of all sizes and offerings, with participating restaurants presenting one or more of the following: a Signature Item, or specialty price point for something they regularly offer; a three-course, prix fixe menu at a lower price point; a Signature Event which showcases an out-of-the-box menu, or something their chefs may excel at preparing.
Beaujolais Bistro, Bowl, Campo, Chuy’s Mexican Kitchen, Crème, First Bite Gourmet, Gold ‘N Silver Inn, La Vecchia, Lanna Thai Café & Culinary School, Men Wielding Fire, Noble Pie Parlor, Old Granite Street Eatery, Rapscallion Seafood House & Bar, Rounds Bakery, SoDo, Süp, The Blue Plate, The Cheese Board and Wild River Grille.
Kicking off the weeklong culinary extravaganza is an event featuring many of the participants providing small bite samplers from their menus, and taking advance reservations for their Signature Events. Additionally, culinary demonstrations will be presented, and Nevada Grown will also be on-hand with free produce samples to educate people about sustainable, healthy eating and the importance of supporting local farmers and ranchers. The Reno Bites kick-off event will take place at the Washoe County School District’s Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology located at 380 Edison Way in Reno, and proceeds from the event – which costs $30 to enter for all you can take in small bites, beverages and demonstrations – will benefit the school’s culinary program for career-driven high school students.
Aside from their Reno Bites menu offerings that week, select establishments’ Signature Events will not leave anyone hungry. Bowl will pay tribute to local female farmers at their Farm Bites event on Monday, October 21; Campo will show off some of Chef Mark Estee’s more unusual skills at their Offal Offal Experience on Tuesday, October 22; SoDo will bring the wine country to Reno with Icons of Napa on October 23, an evening hosted by Reno Gazette-Journal’s Food & Drink Editor Johnathan Wright; Wild River Grille pairs an array of wild game with whiskeys at Wild & Whiskey on Thursday, October 24; and Rapscallion will provide a Friday feast on October 25.
Chowdown plus get the lowdown on some renowned chefs’ techniques at the Chefs Showdown on Saturday, October 26 at 3 p.m. At this year’s expanded event, eight of Reno’s best chefs will showoff their culinary prowess to a crowd on the full gourmet kitchens at event sponsor and host Czyz’s Appliance, located at 9738 S. Virginia St., Suite AB in Reno. One chef will come out on top after preparing a dish from three mystery ingredients, then presenting it to a panel of judges. This event is free to spectators, with reserved tables – including some with prime kitchen-side viewing – available for purchase.
