Two seasoned restaurateurs will bring to reality the singular culinary vision of one man when CommRow’s menagerie of eateries and bars, dubbed “TheRow”, opens on October 1. Inspiration for each was found in developer Fernando Leal’s childhood memories of Chicago, passions and world travels, bringing to life a culturally-inspired gastronomic array.

Tony Aiazzi and Xavier Mariezcurrena of Philadelphia’s Workshop Kitchen, a food and beverage development company, assisted with the development of the menus and concepts for “TheRow”. Aiazzi, originally from Reno, returned for this project after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, then working with internationally-renowned Parisian Chefs Alain Senderens and Hélène Darroze, plus Chef Charlie Palmer. Mariezcurrena is an experienced beverage director and sommelier whose expertise was honed while working with such celebrated chefs as Bobby Flay and Bryan Voltaggio.

From tuna tartar to a traditional taco, “TheRow” will have something for everyone, with each eatery offering at least one vegetarian option:

Qué – Inspired by the specialized flavors and preparation methods of Queretaro, Mexico, Que’s three-bite tacos al carbon and handmade gorditas are stuffed full of fire-roasted salsas, cheeses and roasted meats.

Da Stand – Featuring classic Italian beef sandwiches made with beef roasted in fresh herbs and spices, locally-baked breads and scratch-made jus. Also offering Italian sausages, fresh giardiniera, sweet peppers and Leal’s childhood favorite, “Dunk Bread”.

Lemoni – A Mediterranean-inspired grill with heavy Greek influence, offering flaming saganaki, falafel, souvlaki and much more.

TarTarBar – Sashimi-grade fish, classic tartars, and cevichés, complemented by sparkling wines, sakes and champagne cocktails.

Twisted – A do-it-yourself dessert bar, featuring soft serves, toppings and candy by the pound.

Checkout – The only place in town offering La Colombe, an independently-owned coffee company whose free-trade grown and harvested beans will have less than 48-hours between roaster and coffee cup.

Up – Healthy snacks for powering up in the climbing facility, including fruit smoothies, housemade granolas, fresh veggies and dips.

Órale – An ode to the agave plant, this tequileria boasts more than one hundred tequilas with a focus on small and artisanal producers. No sour mix will be found in this bar, only seasonal margaritas made from fresh fruits plus a selection of imported Mexican beers.

Lucky Lane – Celebrating the classic pre-prohibition cocktail bar, this tribute to Reno’s gaming heyday features a wide bourbon and whisky selection, cordials, and classically-made cocktails such as sidecars, gimlets and original daiquiris.

V15 – This centrally-located bar within CommRow’s BaseCamp climbing facility will offer a full-service bar, wines by the glass and draft beers for guests as they take in vistas from the outdoor patio, or view the action on the indoor boulders.

Centric – This intimate, cabaret-style, live entertainment venue will feature local performers plus a full bar.

Located adjacent to Downtown Reno’s landmark arch, CommRow will open on October 1st as the area’s first nonsmoking, nongaming urban adventure destination. In addition to “TheRow”, it will feature a world-class climbing facility, core fitness programming, event space, and two live performance venues. The pet-friendly HANG Hotel, and an “Adventure Deck” providing BMX and skate parks, outdoor bouldering and more are also planned for 2012.

If you’ve been craving Crystal Shrimp or longing for a Godzilla Roll but cannot decide where to satisfy your hunger, you’re not alone. With fresh fish flown in daily, Reno Tahoe has an abundance of the freshest sushi bars in the country. We believe you can’t go wrong with choosing any of the region’s sushi restaurants, but here are a few of our fans’ favorites.

We asked our near 20,000 followers on our Facebook page, “Where is your favorite all-you-can eat sushi spot?” Many responded, casting their votes for a variety of local sushi bars but it was Hiroba Sushi on Skyline Boulevard that came out on top. Hiroba Sushi offers an exciting menu in a hip and energetic environment. Their chefs are quick to take and prepare your order, even when the recently expanded restaurant is packed, as it usually is. Enjoy their all-you-can eat lunch menu for $17.95 or their all-you-can eat dinner menu for $22.95.

Taking second place was Ijji Sushi on East Prater Way in Sparks. Larger than most sushi bars, Ijji Sushi is the perfect place to bring a large party for any occasion. They recently added, to their already extensive menu, an assortment of delectable new items such as the Island Long Roll and the Hawaiian. Stop by for all-you-can eat lunch for $15.95 or all-you-can eat dinner for $20.95.

Coming in at a close third was Sushi Pier 2 on South Virginia Street. Sushi Pier 2 has been a local favorite for many years, and for a good reason. Their friendly service compliments the restaurant’s relaxed and social atmosphere equipped with large flat screen TVs. Join in on the all-you-can eat fun at lunch for $16.99 or at dinner for $24.99.

Along with these local favorites, Reno Tahoe also offers exotic sushi dining experiences inside our casinos. Explore your mouth-watering options at:

Out of nearly 20 cookers from as far away as Texas, a new hometown favorite and cook-off rookie took the Championship Trophy home for Best in Show. Judges voted Pie Face Pizza Co. of Reno’s wing sauce the most flavorful of the weekend. Coming in second was another popular pizza joint, Reno’s own Pizza Plus. After winning the annual event for several years, Havin’ an Affair of Las Vegas fell to third place, but did take home the People’s Choice Award. Redneck BBQ of Reno and Famous Dave’s rounded out the list of favorites, placing fourth and fifth at the 10th Annual Cook-off.

Each of the Downtown Reno casinos also challenged each other to a cook-off of their own at this 4th of July weekend affair. Winning for the second year straight was Silver Legacy, whose secret sauce was chosen over Club Cal-Neva and Harrah’s, who tied for second place honors.

In a special judging Friday afternoon, members of the local media tasted wings prepared by featured cookers. The 2011 Media Choice Award was given to Circus Circus for a unique and tangy mango habanera sauce that pleased the most palates.

With so many winners, you’ll just have to try all the top picks to determine your favorites.

Congrats to everyone who participated in the 10th Annual Great International Chicken Wing Society Cook-off and Street Faire, see you next year!

Reno’s newest Deli and Bakery, Krumblz, boasts freshly baked bread, French pastries and a delicious array of breakfast and lunch entrees that are bursting with flavor and presented in a way that is both intuitive and unexpected.

Executive Chef and co-owner Juan Villa, a native Nevadan, has been in the culinary field since 1992, working every station in the kitchen from prep cook to Chef de Cuisine. Villa graduated with honors from Western Culinary Institute-Le Cordon Bleu in 2004.

Since graduation, Villa’s innovation, style and culinary mastery has delighted guests in several restaurants, lending him the well-deserved title of Executive Chef, most recently at Lexie’s on the River at the Siena Hotel Spa & Casino.

“We built Krumblz to bake bread for our neighbors and the Reno community. We use only the freshest ingredients and offer original, innovative flavors through traditional baked goods. Our breads are used to provide one-of-a-kind sandwiches and our pastries are created with ingenuity and simplicity and are beautiful to behold, but even better to eat!” said Chef Juan Villa.

Lead Pastry Chef and business partner Eduardo Quevedo is excited and optimistic at the recent opening of the new restaurant. Over the past 10 years Quevedo has gained the knowledge and techniques necessary for Krumblz to succeed in this competitive market. Quevedo creates tasty pieces of art such as lemon tortes, Petite Fours, specialty filled mousses and danishes, taking time in the presentation. Quevedo personally approves every item displayed within the bakery case. Prior to opening Krumblz, Quevedo was lead Pastry Chef of Lexie’s on the River.

Krumblz’s menu features both breakfast and lunch entrees ranging from $4.95 to $9.00 with pastries ranging from $1.00 to $2.95, and also has an extensive organic tea and Italian coffee menu.

Join us at the grand opening on Sunday, November 7th! Enjoy free pastries and complimentary Lavazza Italian coffees starting at 6:00 a.m., as well as discounted menu items and 25% off any custom cake orders.

Krumblz Deli and Bakery is located at 80 Giroux Street, on the corner of 2nd Street across from Renown Medical Center.
